Key Stage 3

Year 7

Intent

Our Year 7 maths curriculum interleaves both new and old, beginning with an exploration of new algebraic concepts before then revisiting more familiar themes of number and geometry; in doing so students build on, and enhance, their existing Key Stage 2 knowledge and skills. They become increasingly familiar and confident with number problems, both with and without the use of a scientific calculator, considering where we experience these in our daily lives. They also have the opportunity to explore probability for the first time.

Skill Development

Students will expand on and become fluent in topics from KS2 and be able to apply their knowledge to a variety of problems, some of which will require students to use their logic/reasoning skills. Students will develop use of a Scientific calculator.

Year 8

Intent

Our Year 8 students are challenged to use proportional reasoning to solve problems, thereby developing their knowledge and understanding of fractions and percentages; they then move on to tackle data and probability. Building on previously taught algebraic reasoning topics, they strengthen their understanding further, now delving into angles, area and symmetry. They are encouraged to make connections between what they are learning and the world around them.

Year 9

Intent

New algebraic and geometric concepts take centre stage in Year 9. The conjecture and deduction topics interleave multiple strands of maths and develop students’ skill in presenting mathematical arguments. Practical life skills play an important role in our money and rates topics, thereby supporting the development of financial literacy. Students continue to be exposed to new knowledge, exploring geometrical concepts, as they prepare for transition to Key Stage 4.
