FRENCH

Intent

Our Year 7 students begin to develop the essential building blocks of learning a language, initially using pronouns such as ‘I’ and the present tense. They are introduced to a wide range of vocabulary and move from simple recognition in the first instance, to manipulation of this vocabulary to express their ideas. Skill Development

Skill Development

Building upon the foundations laid in Year 7, students will be able to use their range of vocabulary and extend their thinking and justifications by expressing themselves in a variety of ways to suit the needs of a general conversation.

Our Year 9 students work with increasing independence, utilising a wider range of grammatical and vocabulary structures. They deepen existing knowledge and skill in conversing about topics such as family to now express views with accuracy and fluency. They are more confident to respond to heard, written or spoken French and leave Key Stage 3 well equipped to progress onto GCSE.

As students enter year 9, students will be bridging the gap between KS3 and GCSE. Students will be following a syllabus of Personal, Social, Economic and Health topics which will allow them to consolidate the core vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge from the breadth of work done during year 7 and 8 but also allow them to extend their knowledge to current and global affairs, putting them in the driving seat for their GCSE years should they choose to continue their studies.

Skill Development

Year 9 continues to build upon the bedrock of language seen and used habitually in Years 7 and 8. Students will enhance their knowledge of both linguistic structures and cultural awareness, and begin to explore extended passages as well as enhancing their knowledge of expressing themselves in a range of situations.

Students will improve and strengthen their knowledge of a range of past, present and future tenses, in order to confidently talk about and understand what they and other persons do in a range of situations in a range of times.

There will also continue to be a focus on translation and interpretation skills in order to ensure we can communicate effectively in the modern world.
