Year 7

SPANISH

Intent

Our Year 7 students begin to develop the essential building blocks of learning a language, initially using pronouns such as ‘I’ and the present tense. They are introduced to a wide range of vocabulary and phonics to enable them to move from simple recognition in the first instance, to manipulation of this vocabulary to describe and express their ideas. By the end of the year, students will be able to understand and use different forms of the present and future tenses, as well as form simple negatives. Additionally, students will be able comprehend the gender of nouns, articles and adjectives, as well as develop an understanding and appreciation of other cultures.

Skill Development

Year 8

Intent

Students will build on grammatical and cultural knowledge from primary school to learn about modern Germany and Germanic countries and develop an understanding of the cultural diversity. They will learn to communicate effectively using an additional language with real purpose.

Skill Development

Students are aspiring to recognize and improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in German through a variety of topics studied in KS3. Over time they will be able to express themselves confidently using a variety of vocabulary, opinions and be able to be creative with language by manipulating verbs to understand and use different tenses. They will also develop their comprehension of both Germanic and global citizenship and culture, not only for personal use and translation purposes but also for both personal and future professional usage in an international context.

SPANISH

Intent

The Y8 Spanish curriculum will build on the knowledge and skills acquired in Year 7. Students will continue to describe events in the present tense and their knowledge of the future tense will be broadened by the introduction of the conditional tense. They will also be able to describe and narrate events in the past and future tenses as well as further build upon their knowledge of adjective agreements and opinions.

The curriculum also allows pupils to further manipulate vocabulary and grammar in order to produce extended written accounts which now include 3 tenses and justified opinions as well as comparisons.

Year 9

French

Intent

Our Year 9 students work with increasing independence, utilising a wider range of grammatical and vocabulary structures. They deepen existing knowledge and skill in conversing about topics such as family to now express views with accuracy and fluency. They are more confident to respond to heard, written or spoken French and leave Key Stage 3 well equipped to progress onto GCSE.

Skill Development

Using prior knowledge and transferable skills students will practise and improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, being able to justify opinions and expand descriptions in numerous tenses. Students will be able to translate extended pieces of writing in a number of tenses and with a variety of grammatical challenges. Students will also be able to communicate more creatively and accurately as they are able to use a variety of grammatical and vocabulary structures and are encouraged to use independent learning skills.

GERMAN

Intent

As students enter year 9, students will be bridging the gap between KS3 and GCSE. Students will be following a syllabus of Personal, Social, Economic and Health topics which will allow them to consolidate the core vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge from the breadth of work done during year 7 and 8 but also allow them to extend their knowledge to current and global affairs, putting them in the driving seat for their GCSE years should they choose to continue their studies.

Skill Development

Students start to speak with increasing confidence, communicating their views and participating in conversations. They can listen to a variety of forms of spoken language and read a greater range of sources, authentic or adapted. When writing, students use a wider range of vocabulary and include three tenses with increasing confidence and accurately. The curriculum also builds up on students’ prior knowledge of Spanish phonics and revisits the most common Spanish sounds.
