Year 7

Intent

Students develop an understanding of what it means to be part of a community and, through an exploration of global community membership, are encouraged to ‘find their voice’, ‘make a stand’ and ‘speak up’ about worldwide issues. Students respond positively to public speaking opportunities and are supported to develop articulacy and fluency; empowered to express independent ideas through talk. In doing so, they become increasingly confident and active members of the Newark Academy community.

Skill Development

Students will be expected to select and using ICT tools and techniques appropriately, safely and efficiently. They will develop research skills such as use of a search engine & relevant advanced search functions, will identify appropriate information and evaluate its source. Effective communication in a group will develop an understanding of what makes a quality presentation while looking at quality exemplars. Development of oracy skills such as the use of SHAPE to assess the effectiveness of communication in the group presentations. We will encourage students to consider their formal articulation of ideas as well as use of complex vocabulary and clear vocal projection.

Year 8

Intent

Students are encouraged to delve deeper into their curriculum learning through independent exploration of subject content. They are given the chance to present to a variety of audiences and various opportunities for public speaking to develop articulacy and fluency. Furthermore, students also have the opportunity to explore worldwide issues and take part in a debate, improving their critical thinking and persuasive arguments.

They will continue to improve their foundational research skills such as use of a search engine & relevant advanced search functions, will identify appropriate information and critically evaluate the provenance of its source. Continuing to improve on their communication skills will support their understanding of what makes a quality presentation.
