Jacob named as Newark and Sherwood Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year 2016

We are pleased to announce that Jacob in year 9 has been named as Newark and Sherwood Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year 2016 at the Active4Today sports awards.

Back in November Jacob’s personal achievements were recognised for his numerous successes in Kayaking, and he was presented with his award by Councillor Roberts.

He has also since been named as runner up for the Nottinghamshire Junior Disabled Sportsperson award at the Sports Nottinghamshire ceremony on the 1st February. He said:

‘Nobody could see me because it was all on the radio but I was so shocked at winning that, for the first time ever, I couldn’t think of anything to say!’

Jacob was born with a muscle weakening disability, which makes competing against his peers challenging. When his was 8 years old he joined Newark 4A’s disability club which specialises in kayaking. Soon after he was taking part in the paddle-ability sprint racing at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham.

He trains 3 times a week, either in the gym or on the water, which has enabled him to significantly improve both 200m and 500m. He has also recently started marathon racing over 4 miles and was promoted from Division 9 straight to Division 7 last season, after winning his Division in an able-bodied competition.

To have won this award and then come top three in the Nottinghamshire award too is a fantastic achievement. Well done Jacob!
